I have gone to the same dentist in Harlan since I was a little kid, and this spring I decided to make a switch to a dentist here in Ames because its looking like this is going to be my permanent home. I had my first check-up about 3 weeks ago, and they found 8 cavities! I couldn't believe it! I take care of my teeth, I have a clean mouth! I have been going to my Harlan dentist for regular check-ups, every 6 months, and he didn't even detect any cavities. The dentist here has all kinds of technology to locate cavities, lasers and stuff, so it was a much more thorough exam than I have ever had in my life. So I came home from the dentist that day and told Mike that he should go to the dentist because he hadn't gone in 8 YEARS, and if I had this much damage and I've been seeing the dentist regularly, I thought, "Oh man, his mouth is going to be horrible."
Nope. His is mouth is great! He has one teeny-weeny minor area of concern, taken care of in a 15 minute trip to the dentist.
So today I had my first trip to the dentist to get some cavities filled. I had two filled today, and I made an appointment to have 3 more done in October. I will get the other 3 fixed later in the fall. Ugh, I really don't mind going to the dentist to get my teeth cleaned, but I hate going to get cavities filled because of the needle they use to numb my mouth--it hurts!

Camping in Clear Lake
Mike and I went camping over the weekend in Clear Lake. We met friends Huston, Halverson, Becca, Sam, Jenn, Pat, and Maggie there on Friday. We were just about the only people in the campsite using tents, but it was fun! Not long after we set up our tents, a strong storm came through, so we went to Tim and Sue's (my in-laws) to grill out and watch Hoarders on TV until the storm passed over. When we got back to the site, most of it was underwater and muddy, but we still made a fire and had a great time.
Putting up tents...
Campfire fun
MUD EVERYWHERE
Our tent village surrounded by campers and RVs
Saturday morning we went out on the lake for a boat ride. I tried to be helpful by lowering the boat lift, but since I don't really know anything about boating or boat lifts, I ended up getting caught in the lift and bruising my sides and ripping my swim suit and tank top... this is six hours later, so I am smiling more...
Lake-proofing the important items
My parents joined us after lunch, and it ended up being a very fun and very eventful afternoon. The boat ran out of gas and then the boat stopped working in the middle of the lake (and our parents didn't rescue us until we called them, so we floated around for about an hour), several people cut their feet on mussels on the bottom of the lake and Pat cut his hand on a tube rope, Mike learned to wake board, my parents had a great time boating and floating on tubes, and even I got in the lake to float around in my clothes since I had no swim suit.
Tim using his boating knowledge to get the boat going... (or as Mike said, "All it needed was for my dad to touch it to make it work again.")
Saturday night there was more rain and storms, but not until after we made the biggest fire ever and had some delicious smores. It was a pretty great weekend!
Our huge fire
The view from our tent about 11pm... there was about 3 inches of water under our tent

Playing with photos
I am trying to figure out how to add features and insert things, so I am just going to post some random pictures to learn how to do this.
This really isn't as hard as I thought it would be...
Now I just need to get better about taking pictures more often... The ones I posted are from 2 and 3 years ago.
That was way easier than I thought it would be--get ready to see lots of pictures of my cats.

I'm starting a blog...
I've decided to start a blog about the happenings of my life. This is a complete learning experience for me--so far I've learned how to add a template background which is the dot design behind my writing.
Why am I doing this? I guess I just want a record of the things that go on in my life. A way to document things that I am doing. I want to be able to share what I am doing with the people in my life... I guess that's why most people blog. So welcome to my blog--ENJOY!
